Theatre Jacksonville announces its 106th consecutive season, which opens with Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House for the Classic in San Marco. Shows range from the beloved Barefoot in the Park to two more uproarious comedies to intimate theatrical portraits of WWII sweethearts and famed songwriter Stephen Sondheim.
The 106th season is as follows:
Classic in San Marco:
¨ A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, opening September 12 – Winner of three Drama Desk awards and nominated for six Tonys, this celebrated play explores the ways that society restricts individuals, especially women. Amy Herzog’s contemporary version makes the story relevant and thrilling.
Mainstage Productions:
¨ Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon, opening November 7 – This ticklish comedy follows a newlywed couple, nearly exact opposites, from a quick honeymoon through a visit from her loopy mother and a dinner where everything that can go wrong does.
¨ Packing Up Polly by Leslie Kimbell, opening January 16 – Polly Porter, a famous 1970s gospel singer, has gone on up to heaven – but there’s one surprise for her daughter Caroline: Polly was an extreme hoarder. Many laughs, screams and tears ensue as Caroline and her three best friends attempt to pack up the house.
¨ Ken Ludwig’s Dear Jack, Dear Louise by Ken Ludwig, opening February 27 – Two strangers meet by letter during WWII and fall in love, as Tony Award-winning playwright Ludwig tells the story of his parents’ heartwarming courtship.
¨ Play On by Rick Abbot, opening April 17 – This comedy of a play within a play is a zany love letter to community theater, as a theater group tries and fails while a haughty author keeps revising the script.
¨ Sondheim on Sondheim with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, conceived and directed by James Lapine, opening June 5 – The genius songwriter Stephen Sondheim is celebrated with his own songs amid a framework of exclusive and in-depth video interviews.
“We have a very interesting season for our audiences, with lots of laughs, thought-provoking themes and touching tributes to real life people. We also spotlight some great writers and artists who are household names, including Henrik Ibsen, Neil Simon and Stephen Sondheim” said Executive Director Sarah Boone. “Theatre Jacksonville is firm in its commitment to the arts and knows that exposure to great theater makes us better human beings and communities. With decreasing funding for arts and humanities, the support of our patrons is more important than ever for us to remain one of the oldest continually running playhouses in the country.
