Full Name: Purplespace

Thanks for your time. So, tell us in what part of the First Coast you reside now and how long you have lived there?
We have two members who have lived in Springfield for nearly 10 years. One has lived in Orange Park, and the other in Mandarin, for over 10 years.
When did you know you had an interest in music?
All of us were drawn to music from a very early age. We’re all fortunate to have come of age during a time of incredible music. From Pixies, to New Order, to My Bloody Valentine, these were some of the bands that inspired us to make our own music.
Did you start with any specific instrument and migrate to other instruments?
We started with guitars and drums, but more recently have added some synths for additional textures. While we all have our primary roles, we all do a little bit of everything now.
Are you currently in a band (or bands)?
Purplespace

Who is your favorite musician, or what musician influenced you the most?
Pixies, New Order, My Bloody Valentine, Belly, R.E.M., and more recently artists like CHRVCHES, and M83.
Are there any specific memories or highlights of your career that you would like to tell us about?
I would say the thing we’re most proud of is our longevity and volume of work. We’ve been together for over 20 years and in that time have released over a dozen albums and over 200 songs.
What area bands or musicians are at the top of your list to go out to hear?
Echo Foxtrot, Tonal, & The Kate Rays are area artists we’re really into.

Do you have a favorite venue that you enjoy playing locally?
We love playing JackRabbits. We first started playing there over 20 years ago, back when they first opened. Tim Hall has been great to us and great to music in Jacksonville. We really enjoy playing there.
Do you have any gigs coming up to tell our readers about?
Porchfest will be our last show for 2025. We’re currently looking at dates after the holidays and the first of the new year.
What is the best way for musicians to network?
So much is online now, and that’s great for independent artists to get their work out there, but playing local clubs with area artists is still the best way to make connections.
Are there any local venue owners/managers that you would like to rave about?
As mentioned above, we want to give a huge shout-out to Tim Hall at JackRabbits.
If you had a question you would like to ask another musician, what would it be?
I’m very interested in inspiration and the songwriting process. So I would love to ask as many musicians as I can how they go about doing what they do. Of course, there’s no one way to go about it, so getting as many different responses as possible is interesting.

Personal hobbies or interests? Family?
All things music. Making music. Playing music. Going to live shows. It’s all of our favorite interests.
What’s the best thing for you about living on the First Coast?
The connections you make. Jacksonville is unique in that it’s a big city, but so many people are connected. Going to a local show in Jacksonville, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll run into people you know.
