What’s your name and what fills your time?
I am John Miller, owner and senior attorney at Rock Solid Law and Title, husband to Krista, dad to Avalon and Ian, and lead vocalist and bass player for the band BayStreet. As the son of a Presbyterian minister, our family moved quite a bit, all around the southeastern USA. My childhood “wonder years” were in St. Petersburg, and between that and vacationing at our grandparents’ house in Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I fell in love with the ocean.
I attended law school in my home state of Virginia at Washington and Lee University, and fortunately, they have a strong alumni presence in Jacksonville and I was able to land a job here. Once I came, I fell in love with the city, and especially with the Jacksonville Beaches.
Anything special going on for this summer?
We love how long the summer stretches here at the Beaches. We are fortunate to live in a house that was begun in 1919, and we are presently completing a renovation. So, we are enjoying moving back into our home. Both of our children are involved in soccer, and being soccer parents is a continuing passion project.
Any hobbies or interests worth telling us about?
I feel so fortunate to have a balanced life where I can practice law and be able to play in a band that just celebrated 37 years. Together with our family, that keeps me busy most of the time.
What’s one thing (funny, different, cool) that many might not know about you?
Before I switched to bass guitar, I was a drummer for a dozen years, including marching with bagpipers, playing show tunes in the USSR, and opening a rock concert for the White Animals and The Producers.
What’s the best part of living here on the First Coast?
I love it here! I came here in the mid-80s and love the beach lifestyle. Jacksonville continues to evolve into a really cool city. I feel privileged to have grown with it over the last 40 years. My quest is to help families protect themselves and their loved ones by making the estate planning process an enjoyable experience.
Anything else that you would like to tell the community?
With all of the strains of modern life, it is so important that we continue to be kind to each other. Try to show a little bit of good old Southern hospitality. Also, I wish as a community we cared more about our natural environment, especially including the beach, and we could stop littering on it. Following the example of a dear friend, I try to take at least one piece of trash off the beach every time I leave it.
