WALKERS
By Dee Coleman
A varied and special breed….Walkers. They come in many forms, all sizes, all ages, and all shapes. They are the dog walkers, the aerobic walkers, the slow walking parents with children, the casual walkers, the lovers’ hand-in-hand walkers. There are some with goals, agendas like raising the breathing and heart rate, but most are content to enjoy the ethereal ambiance of blue skies, lapping waves and shell hunting.
Do you see those runners? Well, I’m not one of them. The knees are shot due to too many years playing tennis on hard courts. I’m a Walker, a devotee.
It’s my – medication (have to get my fix).
It’s my – meditation (got to clear the mind).
It’s my – relaxation – ( I deserve this!)
I sing when I walk, typically vacillating between Van Morrison, Bob Seeger and childhood Baptist hymns. I pray. I sort out that conversation that should be held with that acquaintance, friend, child, – censoring and editing as I go. Oh, I love Beach People! I’m always game to pat that dog, admire that baby, greet that stranger, all the while marveling in the surrounding beauty that we all share. I’ve walked in almost 100 degree temperatures as well as below freezing weather.
It’s an addiction, I suppose. It affects my metabolism, my psyche, my cardiovascular system, my oxygen rate and clears out the cobwebs. I bask in the sheer joy and beauty of the ocean and sky. How fortunate I am.
How fortunate WE are! It’s free, doesn’t cost anything. Anyone can do it.
I’ve loved my hard work, my education that got me to where I am. You know, my Ph.D. in Walking. I’m an aficionado. Can’t wait to get out there. I just know it will be a gorgeous beach day tomorrow – PERFECT for walking!
