I saw these pictures just now from a powerful moment today with my veteran Dad (Marines) and the local SAR (Son’s of American Revolution) unit visiting him and honoring him and his local contributions to the group, and presenting him with a 5 year pin.
I have a few quick thought’s, and lessons I learned from these images.
- People Treating People with Kindness. The world is a bit crazy right now. But a “few good men” not only took a few hours out of their day to pay tribute to my Dad and his service, but also to just say hello again old friend …
- Respect. Man how cool is it that “fellow Patriots at SAR” followed the old school rules? Tribute to a past contributor at the local chapter, and then show it by showing up, IN PERSON …
- Not Forgetting. How easy to just roll on when a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable? And then also allowing your thoughts to wander to an old friend, and how is he doing? What would help him feel good if only for a moment?
- Going Above and Beyond. Man I don’t do enough even though I’m trying. If you can put a smile, or two every day on someone not doing as well as you, than what the heck are you waiting for?
- Mom Takes a Mean Picture. So I have to take a lot of credit here. I taught her how to take pics on her limited senior phone, and she did a really good job. No edits from me (well one crop) and here they are below …
Thank you to Bob Ainsley and the SAR gang in New Bern NC! You made my Dad’s day!
OK I will admit, a tear tonight too …
Good night Dad. Miss you and love you …

Thank you Glenn. What a wonderful tribute! Love your new magazine. Mom
So wonderful to see my former neighbors, Betsy and Bob Shuck and the honor he received. Their son Glenn was a good buddy of my son Tom Tiede and I have been lucky enough to see them both grow into wonder adults – almost seniors now. Our lives go by too quickly but I love FB and eagerly await new developments of Glenn’s new love on 4 legs. Nice to still be around to connect the little kids in the neighborhood (Manor Country Club in Maryland) to grown sons in Kentucky, N. Carolina and Florida from my condo in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Congratulations Bob and Betsy.
Thank you Pat. You were a good friend in those days, and so were Tommy and Glenn. I love FB also.
It is us who are honored, to spend a bit of time again with Bob. He’s a good man and fellow SAR member, and we miss him at our meetings and events.
Thanks for sharing this story, Glenn. A kind act with so many life lessons. One way to build community.
