Ellen Glasser’s life is a 40-plus year story in public service. It includes a decorated career as an FBI Special Agent; service as president of a national association of FBI agents; several years on the faculty at the University of North Florida, and five years as Mayor in Atlantic Beach. With assignments across the nation and the world, Glasser picked Atlantic Beach as the perfect final home to settle with family and to raise her children.

Anything special going on for this summer?

Ellen Glasser. I am featured in the Netflix documentary “How to Rob a Bank,” which was released in early June. It is the story of serial bank robber in Seattle and efforts to catch him by a violent crime task force I supervised back in the 1990s. One of the directors, Seth Porges, lives in Atlantic Beach, and he made the documentary happen. I hope folks watch it to see what happened! I am enjoying hearing from people I know locally and all over the country. I couldn’t’ talk about the case for years, so it is surreal reliving it all on Netflix 28 years later.

Any hobbies or interests worth telling us about?

I just completed my dream of walking the 500 miles Camino Frances route of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. For me, it was a religious pilgrimage but it was so much more. I walked alone with my backpack, finding places to sleep along the way and with little more than the clothes on my back. My feet still hurt. I talk about it on my personal Facebook page.

What’s one thing (funny, different, cool) that many might not know about you?

Last year, I took a stand-up comedy class at First Coast Comedy on Mayport Road. What fun! I wasn’t planning to be a stand-up comic but I hoped to inject more humor into both my written and spoken words. I did one stand-up gig for a group of senior citizens. It was a little risqué, but it was a blast! There is no video, thank goodness.

How do you like living on the First Coast?

I love living in Atlantic Beach where we have an eclectic, small-town vibe, and almost everyone is friendly. We have a high quality of life here, with the beaches, marshes, tons of parks, and trees; lots of outdoor fun; and the inspiration that comes with living on the coast. Here on the First Coast, everything I need is nearby, and I am grateful to know so many people here who are devoted to family, service, kindness and faith.

Anything else that you would like to tell the community?

I am running for a third term as mayor. I did not run in 2022, but I have realized there is still room of me to contribute to preserving our special way of life in Atlantic Beach. My nonpartisan platform is built about people, public safety, and preservation. We don’t have a primary in Atlantic Beach, and the election is on November 5th.
