“Vanishing Atlantic Beach”

The idea for these new paintings came about when I was riding through Atlantic Beach a few months ago and was surprised when I rode past the location of one of my favorite houses on Ocean Blvd. and it wasn’t there anymore! It had been a week previously, but now it was an empty lot.

I began thinking of the regularity of these tear-downs and how our cityscape had changed so much, even in the last decade!

I decided to try to capture some of the small and (I think) charming homes, especially in our Historic District before they vanish under the wrecking ball. The houses I chose were substantially the same size as originally built without major renovations, as far as I could tell.

Happily, I found that there are a lot of small, charming houses still here. Larger houses are indeed proliferating, but our town has a mixture of periods, sizes, and types, making our streets interesting and appealing.

Along with ‘Vanishing Atlantic Beach” houses are a variety of other places I have painted lately. I hope you enjoy viewing my work. Let me know what you think!

All paintings are primarily in pastel, which is like chalk. All surfaces are fine quality on acid-free papers with museum-quality glass!

*North Beaches Art Walk

The best little art walk in town, for 14+ years, established in 2007.In loving memory of our founding members:

Alice M. Gartland
January 27, 1922 – May 6, 2021

Linda H. Stewart
October 28, 1957 -August 15, 2021

The North Beaches Art Walk got its start in 2007 when Beaches art-industry professionals JoAnne Adams, Alice Gartland and Linda Stewart came together in hopes of recreating the popular art walk atmosphere of Downtown.

Through their nurturing and dedication, the event grew considerably. And on every third Thursday of the month, the streets of the Beaches Town Center erupt with creativity. What was once a small pool of carefully selected artists has now become a bubbling ocean of art, a place where woodworkers commingle with mixed media designers and musicians play into the night. Welcoming to locals and out-of-towners alike, to say it’s a communal experience.
