Sprawling, suburban Arlington covers part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, with its coastal wetlands and hardwood forests. In the preserve, the Fort Caroline National Memorial was the site of a short-lived, 1500s French colony. Rustic woodland trails wind through the Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens, while malls and big-box supercenters mix with family restaurants and fast-food spots.
