At First Coast Comedy we do funny. Our comedians specialize in improv comedy, meaning our shows are based entirely on your suggestions. Our trained comedy professionals have no plan and willingly dive headfirst into almost any challenge the audience will throw at them, resulting in unforgettably hilarious moments. For those reasons, no two shows are ever the same.

It's a pleasure to meet you. Tell us a little bit about your background and your journey, and what you're focused on today

In February of 2021, Alex and Madelaine Grindeland moved to Jacksonville from Seattle to open First Coast Comedy along with their dear friends Dave & Nam. Alex has owned and operated another improv comedy club in Seattle (CSz Seattle-Home of ComedySportz) for 10 years and has wanted to open another location for quite some time. Jacksonville checked every box they could think of and then some- better weather, lower cost of living, close to the water, and an opportunity to be the first brick-and-mortar improv comedy club in a new city. Opening the doors was challenging. They had to take on numerous projects for the space they leased to comply with the city code and zoning requirements. Between walls knocked down and rebuilt, construction, remodeling, and more, morale took a beating. Nearly a year of trials later, First Coast Comedy was finally and gratefully able to get the theatre open and running in May of 2022. Alex.& Madelaine Grindeland are the owners and managers, who perform nearly every weekend. David Bogan is the Roadshow Manager and Education Director, also performing in all four shows every weekend.

Who do you serve and what makes you different?

Though First Coast Comedy is located just a stone's throw away from Atlantic Beach, we are pleased to serve the entire Duval county area. Through roadshows, corporate team buildings, remote workshops and more, we are pleased and proud to offer improv comedy shows and training across all of Jacksonville. We serve anyone who wants to laugh. What sets First Coast Comedy apart is that it is not a typical comedy club. We are the only improv comedy club in all of Duval County. If you think Whose Line Is It Anyway or Wild N Out, that's the style of comedy we do. Additionally, our early show is always an all ages show that everyone in the family will enjoy. It's not a "kids" show, it's a show for everyone that you can bring the kids to. Our variety of late shows in the 10pm slot are always 21+, for those seeking a more adult comedy experience.

What would you attribute to your success, and how can people get to know you better?

Teamwork is the only thing that keeps our small, family owned business running. We have an amazing cast of people who perform for us every weekend, and a fantastic community of students and performers who all have our backs. To get to know us better, come see a show or join us every Thursday (7-9pm) for a totally free drop-in improv comedy workshop!

What's the best part about living on the First Coast?

The people are what make the First Coast amazing. We have so many creative, intelligent, entrepreneurial and devoted people in this community. It's inspiring to meet friendly faces everywhere.
