Introduction and nominator: Kari Cerato
My dear friend Lourdes Medellada McGuire is tiny, but she is an absolute dynamo, always moving, and she never says no to anyone who needs her. She is a true beaches native and a proud Fletcher grad, and she has a gift for floral arrangements so uncanny that I call her the “orchid whisperer.” She’s the person I send people to for that special item, or an orchid done just right. Talented, generous, and always happy, Lourdes is the friend you can always count on, and the beaches are lucky to call her, and her business, their own.

For more than 45 years, Lourdes Medellada McGuire has called Jacksonville Beach home, building a life and career at the intersection of community and commerce. It started at Hixon’s Surf Shop in the early 1970s, then store and district management with The Limited and The Limited Too, and entrepreneurship alongside her husband, Mike McGuire, with The Second Hand Rose and Jax Palm Trees. In 2000, she opened the store she’d always dreamed of: MOS, short for My Own Store.

Ask Lourdes what she loves most about the First Coast, and the answer comes easily: “The beaches, great, friendly people, and the surfing community,” rounded out by her husband and son’s love of surfing and the family’s shared love of fishing.

Her decades in retail have given her plenty of favorite memories, from surf contests to modeling in a live fashion show at the first Dancing in the Street event, and she’s watched the beaches grow while holding onto the same spirit that drew her in as a kid.

For Lourdes, that spirit is what community and beach life come down to: “This community has given me opportunities to reach my goals, so I live the life I love and love the life I live.” She’s found her place and never stopped sharing that joy with everyone who walks through her door. This spotlight is our way of saying: we noticed.

~~~~~~~~~~
How long have you lived here?
I’ve lived here for 45+ years.
What’s the best thing for you about living on the First Coast?
The beaches, great, friendly people, and the surfing community. My husband and son surf, and we love to fish too.
Any favorite memories from your years in retail at the beaches?
Plenty of memories: Hixon’s Surf Shop, surf contests, the first Dancing in the Street fashion show, watching the corner evolve when the Jaguars came to town, and eventually leaving The Limited to join my husband at Second Hand Rose, then MOS.
What does community, family, or “beach life” mean to you personally?
This community has given me the opportunities to reach my goals. I live the life I love and love the life I live.
