Originally from Memphis, Lisa James began drawing seriously quite by accident. A friend displayed a rudimentary sketch of Lisa’s daughter in her music studio.  People began to inquire, Lisa began to draw client’s children and “Pencil Portraits” was born.

Even though her talent appeared at an early age, Lisa never used her ability for anything other than personal entertainment. Since she has never been formally trained, she never thought she could make any use of drawing.

Lisa is married and has two daughters.  She lives in Ponte Vedra Beach and works from her home studio. She draws for people all over the world via email and digital photography.

The success of Pencil Portraits still has Lisa somewhat baffled.  As requests for drawings of things other than children were made, she began to add subjects to her repertoire.  She has drawn everything from ferrets to yachts.   However, her most popular portraits are her detailed, “photo-realistic” homes. Today, Lisa sticks to drawing structures, although she may sneak-in a “Doggie” portrait now and then.

Hi Lisa. You are so talented and love your drawings. Kick us off and tell us in what part of the First Coast you reside now and how long have you lived there.

Ponte Vedra Beach.  I have lived here twice. Once, as a newlywed in the early 90’s. Then, after 30+ years of raising my family in Memphis, we decided to move back in 2020 during COVID to “retire”, although I am busier than ever.

How long have you been doing your craft or trade?

Since 2002. 23 years as a professional, although I have known I could draw since I was around eight. I used to draw the Breck Shampoo girls from their full-page magazine ads back in the ’60s. I guess I am dating my baby-boomer self…

What brings out your creativity?

Actually, I don’t consider myself creative.  My talent lies in being able to copy what I see.  I call my work “photo-realistic”

What does your work aim to say? Are you trying to bring a smile to someone’s face or add to someone’s home decor?

I get immense pleasure from making folks happy.  I’m still amazed I am paid for it.

Have there been any spaces or designers who have influenced you?

I have always been an admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright

What is your favorite artistic accomplishment?

Just last year! I was commissioned to draw one of the mega-mansions on Ponte Vedra Boulevard.  It took me over two weeks to complete

What’s the best thing for you about living on the First Coast?

Just about everything, except the humidity

How can we see your work?

and homes all over the world

Is there anything else that you want to tell everyone?

Yes, I am completely untrained: self-taught with a gift from above. Also, I schedule one drawing per week, except when I am traveling. I work 25-30 hours per week
