April showers brought May flowers, and in June, we got out of school and stepped into the sunny outside world. In other words – a hop, skip, and jump from spring to summer, and into new tasty treats for Kaitlyn and this next leg of the Coffee Trail!
The next cafe spot I’ve gone to has been Bunny’s Donut Shop, at the original location situated on Bowden Road. The owner Khai, had established Bunny’s as a meaningful place for both his family to thrive, and for the nearby community to come together in a warm space. Having its soft opening in late March 2024, Bunny’s has built itself up into a local spot for everyone to grab their morning coffee and breakfast, with the hospitality and staple presence everyone needs in their lives.
With them opening at 5 am all the days they’re open, it’s good to keep in mind that you should come earlier in order to compete with the morning worker rush. When I had gotten there around 9 am, nearly all of their morning food selection was gone – A lesson learned for next time. Still though, everything that I got was still very fresh and very scrumptious! A croissant sandwich, a maple bar doughnut, an eclair, and a mochachino – Enough to feed a small village for an enjoyable breakfast.
Their bacon, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich was the highlight of the food to me. These are made-to-order, so I got it piping hot after a few minutes of cook time. The croissant was as flaky and fluffy as you’d want it to be, and the bacon was extremely flavorful and juicy, making for a very satisfying combo.
The maple bar was very light and fluffy still; the kind of moistness you’d always want your regular doughnut to be. The maple icing on the top was rather thin, but it still packed in a lot of sugar and flavor, making the bar a yummy sweet treat.
The eclair had a very classic Boston creme-tasting filling, and the chocolate on top was the thick kind that you always need on one of those, creating a very classic taste.
Paired perfectly with everything was the mochaccino – A cappuccino with mocha flavoring added in, and yet they made it so much more than that. It almost tasted like s’mores, the way the fluffy milk mixed with the chocolate, and the espresso that they used also tasted and smelled like a sweeter blend. All of it combined created a decadent drink that I definitely want to drink again sometime soon.
Going to Bunny’s reminded me again of how important local places like this are to the communities they’re in. Whether they’re only a few years old or over 20 years running and counting, having local cafes like this to get your morning pick-me-up helps people get out of bed and face the rest of their day with a smile. This place surely felt beloved already by their neighborhood, and I can’t wait to visit more cafes that provide the same all around Jacksonville.
