Linda Olsen
Typically, I work on a series of paintings with the same theme, tackling multiple pieces simultaneously in different sizes and orientations. This pushes me to explore new ideas creatively. Often, I create a dozen or more works when focused on a particular series.
My studio, filled with music, is my sanctuary. Here, I ponder each phase and plan my next steps, using personal photo references and experiences as inspiration. For example, spending time at the beach has inspired a series of works depicting coastal scenery.
The ocean’s vastness and energy profoundly influence my art. My technique includes colored glazes, energetic brush strokes, modeling paste, and metallics to create depth and movement. This combination captures the essence of my experiences and invites viewers to explore the natural world’s beauty and dynamism.
Anything special going on for this summer?
This summer, my primary focus is to rework some older paintings that I believe need improvements. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned over the years by consistently working on my craft. Additionally, I plan to experiment with different techniques to better convey my artistic vision.
Any hobbies or interests worth telling us about?
My days start fairly early where I enjoy working in my garden before it gets too hot. I have created an outdoor living space in the backyard and hand-painted the cement. I even painted giant sea turtles on my driveway. Many mornings I meet up with a friend to walk on the beach for several miles or swim. Lately I have discovered painting late at night to be my favorite time to work. Music on and a bit of dancing ensues.
What’s one thing (funny, different, cool) that many might not know about you?
Former sailor and racing crew member, competitive street roller-blader, professional photographer, graphic designer, high school art teacher in Pebble Beach, CA. Has lived in Neptune Beach for 45 years and raised my two boys in my forever home.
How do you like living on the First Coast?
Riding around the beach on my little scooter, being able to participate in community activities and enjoying my friends in this beautiful island peninsula…life is good.
