Joyful Abstraction
Joyce is a signature member of the National Collage Society since 2014. That same year she was awarded Artist of the Year with the Jacksonville Watercolor Society.
Her article, “Beyond the Brush”, was featured in the Watercolor Artist magazine in 2009.
Her work has been published in “A Walk Into Abstracts- How Did They Do That?, Vol. II”, as well as “Incite 4, the Best of Mixed Media”. Her work was included in House & Garden magazine in August, September & October 2017.
Art critic, Brian Sherwin, recently praised her work stating, “Gabiou’s artwork is powerful. I happen to be a fan of texture in art… and her work offers that and so much more. The works I viewed offer the perfect balance between being bold and soft — they come together well.“. Her methods are solid. I’m truly impressed.”
Hi Joyce. Kick us off and tell us what part of the First Coast you reside in now and how long have you lived there.
East Arlington – about 20 years
How long have you been doing your craft or trade?
Most seriously after my children were born many years ago. Art has always been my passion.
What brings out your creativity?
Being in the studio surrounded by all my fun supplies, including discarded pieces of paper for collages and paints.
What does your work aim to say? Are you trying to bring a smile to someone’s face or add to someone’s home decor?
Certainly it brings a smile and it’s always an honor to add to someone’s decor if they love it enough to take it home.
Are there any spaces or designers that have influenced you?
Many artists, too numerous to mention
What is your favorite artistic accomplishment?
Signature member of the National Collage Society and I have a painting owned by Preston Haskell.
Do you have a specific piece you would love to talk about or promote?
Always “Gloria Who”? inspired by an article regarding a younger generation that didn’t know who Gloria Steinem is and all she stands for.
What is the best way for artists to network?
Probably social media, Artist’s Openings, and shows. Many Fine Arts Associations in our area.
If you had a question you would like to ask another artist what would it be?
Already know the answer: Draw & paint and draw & paint. Determination helps, and also a passion for your art!
What’s the best thing for you about living on the First Coast?
The beach and the ever-growing art expansion in this area
How can we see your work?
Website: www.joycegabiou.com, Facebook & Instagram, Adele Grage Cultural Center gallery the month of October 2024 and Atlantic Beach Arts Market
Is there anything else that you want to tell everyone?
Do something creative every day! Enjoy the process rather than the outcome of the work.
As an art instructor, (nearly 30 years in the Beaches area), I like to recommend the book, “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It has changed my life as well as the way I paint.
