Set Sail for Adventure: A Unique Experience for Visually Impaired Students
Imagine feeling the wind on your face, the gentle rocking of a sailboat beneath your feet, and the thrill of steering a yacht through open waters. Now imagine experiencing all of this without sight. That’s exactly what a group of visually impaired students from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB) got to do, thanks to an incredible partnership with St. Augustine Sailing.
This isn’t your average boat tour. The captains and crew go above and beyond to create a truly immersive experience. Students get hands-on with every aspect of sailing, from tying knots (feeling the shapes with their fingers) to adjusting the sails by sound. The highlight? Taking the helm and feeling the power of the water through the rudder.
“It’s really an indescribable feeling,” shares Toste Muniz from St. Augustine Sailing. The joy is palpable, with one young sailor hugging her so tightly at the end, not wanting to leave.
But it’s more than just a fun day out. This experience builds confidence and opens up a world of possibilities. The students learn to use all their senses, proving that sailing truly is for everyone.
The adventure doesn’t end on the water. Each child receives a beautiful photo of themselves at the helm and gets to take home a miniature boat with working sails – a lasting reminder of their seafaring adventure.
If you’re looking for a unique and inspiring activity on the First Coast, why not consider learning to sail? Who knows, you might just discover a new passion!
