Introduction: We met Bill years ago through our marketing consulting circles…

He’s been very successful helping hundreds of small businesses, and will be writing weekly blog posts for First Coast Life to provide advice and guidance to our local owners. Bill is currently in the midwest, but has a good internet connection, and yes, he aspires to move to our lovely area in the near future!

Let’s welcome Bill and get to know him a little better …

Why And How Did You Get Started? What Are You Passionate About?

My grandfather had several small businesses. Unfortunately for him, several of them were during the era of the Great Depression. I think I get my love of small businesses and the people who run them from him.

How Did You Get Your Idea Or Concept For The Business?

I’ve always been a consultant. I started out as a CPA. During that time I taught myself how to program PCs. That turned into a 12-year stint of being a custom software developer. During that time I saw how many of my clients, and the firm I worked for, struggled with marketing. I decided I wanted to help apply the systematic thinking I learned as an accountant and programmer to small business marketing.

What Was Your Mission At The Outset?

My mission is to help business owners grow through the use of a systematic marketing system that made sense in terms of time and budget from a small business perspective.

What Are Your Company Goals?

The goal of my business is to be a vehicle where I can help small business owners – particularly those who are looking to serve others while continuing to learn and develop new skills

When Did You Start The Business?

August of 2006

What Made You Choose Your Current Location?

I work with clients all over the country, which has allowed me to move several times without interrupting the business. I recently moved back to KS to be closer to family.

Background On Service(S) Or Product(S) And People That You Serve?

I provide 2 main services. The first is helping people create an effective marketing plan for meeting their goals. I also help them implement parts of that plan through copywriting – writing the words that help them sell.

What Is Unique About Your Business?

Because of my background, I’m a business consultant first who happens to focus on marketing which I believe gives me a different perspective than other marketing folks.

How Many Employees / Breakdown?

Me, myself, and I 😉 I also have a strong referral network that can help my clients with the services I don’t provide.

What Do You Look For In An Employee?

When I had employees, I would focus on their attitude and their willingness to learn. Skills can be taught, but attitude and drive – not so much.

What Are Your Responsibilities As The Business Owner?

Many, but I would say my top responsibility is “Doing work that matters for people that care.” That comes from Seth Godin and I think there is a lot packed into that statement – particularly when you view it as a responsibility.

How Has Covid Affected Your Business?

As COVID accelerated the pace at which small businesses market and sell online, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and help several great owners.

How Do You Advertise Your Business?

I do a lot to intentionally drive Word of Mouth and referral business. Before COVID I frequently did presentations to small business groups. For paid advertising, I use direct mail as part of my Dream 100 outreach strategy. I also do some pay-per-click advertising on Google and Facebook.

To What Do You Attribute Your Success?

A love of learning new things and a bull-headed stubbornness to make things work.

Does Your Company Help Or Get Involved In Community Projects?

Great question. I haven’t, but now that’s on my to-do list.

If You Had One Piece Of Advice To Someone Just Starting A Business, What Would It Be?

Confusion kills sales. Focus on clarity and simplicity.

Personal Hobbies Or Interests? Family? Community Involvement?

Hobbies include backpacking, photography, golf, kayaking – getting outdoors.
