Custom Made Music
Thanks Joe for your time. So tell us in what part of the First Coast do you reside now and how long have you lived there?
I live in Atlantic Beach, a long-time resident of 48 years.
Why and how did you get started?
I taught Industrial Arts and wood shop for 30 years and have always appreciated being able to create useful things. For many years I built furniture in my spare time and I also built a 34 ft. sailboat in my driveway. I was gifted the body of an acoustic guitar by a friend and asked to finish it.
At first I refused and told him I knew nothing about guitar building, but when he said he was going to throw the guitar away, I decided to take it and give it a try.
What aspect of your business are you passionate about?
The art of using nature’s beautiful raw materials and creating a high-quality instrument that also looks beautiful.
How did you get the idea or concept for your business?
I have played guitar for many years, but basically, I started as a hobby; after having some success with several guitars, I decided it was time to share my creations.
From the outset, what would you say was your mission?
I am a perfectionist. So I am always trying to make the perfect guitar. It is probably an unattainable goal, but it is my mission with each guitar.
What are your goals for the company?
To provide great sounding beautiful instruments that can be cherished and enjoyed for many years to come.
When did you start your business?
I started building guitars around 2011.
What made you choose to operate your business in its current location?
Convenience, I have a working shop at my residence. There’s no need for a remote location to do my work.
Can you give us a brief background on the service(s) or product(s) you offer and the people you serve?
Primarily I work with local musicians. In addition to building guitars, I do maintenance and repairs on guitars.
What is a unique attribute/aspect/quality/feature about your business?
My guitars are 100% handmade. I try to choose the best materials I can for my guitars. Mostly I work with exotic woods. I have over 40 years of experience working with wood and different kinds of materials.
How many employees make it happen?
Just me, I am solely responsible for the guitars I make.
What qualities do you look for in an employee?
no employees at this time.
As a business owner, tell us what some of your responsibilities are.
I want to make a quality instrument, that is also beautiful, so a musician will want to continue to develop their skill and make the most of their talent.
How has Covid affected your business?
Other than having Covid myself about a year ago, it really hasn’t affected my business.
How do you advertise your business?
North Beach Art Walk, Facebook- Speckman Handmade Guitars, Instagram, and my website: speckmanguitars.com
To what do you attribute your success?
Years of experience, developing my skills, attention to detail, and perseverance.
Does your company help with or get involved in any community projects?
I haven’t at this time.
If you could offer one piece of advice for someone who’s just starting a business, what would it be?
I spend a lot of time researching my subject matter. I suppose any new business would want to spend time doing the same.
Personal hobbies or interests? Family?
Music obviously, sailing, grandchildren.
What’s the best thing for you about living on the First Coast?
I like living by the water, it is a “laid-back” type of community, with a lot of great people.
Where and how can folks learn more about your business? Links to your website?
www.speckmanguitars.com
Facebook: Speckman Handmade Guitars,
Instagram: joseph.speckman.3
Is there anything else that you want to tell everyone reading this?
I like to display my guitars at the North Beach Art Walk. I usually wait until the fall, since the weather is generally cooler and drier.
How much do you sell your guitars for?
Generally, I will negotiate the price of an instrument. It really depends on several factors. The type of wood and decorative features used and of course, how well the guitar plays and sounds.
Where do you get your materials to build guitars?
Various vendors, luthier suppliers, eBay, etc.
How many guitars have you made, and how long does it take to complete a guitar?
I have just completed my 30th guitar. It takes at least about 100 hrs. or about 2 months to complete a guitar.
