Sit-down With Judy Wolfe
Judy Wolfe was truly a joy getting to know. She is incredibly talented and the hard work she puts into all the steps in gourd art is apparent. Next time you find yourself at the arts market, please take a moment to stop and admire this lovely art form. The preciseness of her painting is truly amazing. Here’s more of a glimpse into our Featured Artist…

Why do you do what you do?

Even though I’ve been an artist my entire life, it wasn’t until I found creating with gourds was magical and became my passion. This all started when we grew some gourds on our land just for fun. I fell in love with gourds and started creating gourd art. There are about 30 different kinds of gourds, so many sizes and shapes. I’ve cut them, carved them, wood burned on them, combined different ones together to make special shapes, it’s truly endless. After a few years, we started going to gourd farms for our raw gourds.

Where is your work space and what brings out your creativity?

I am so blessed to have a beautiful studio behind our house that was built for a mother in law’s house. It’s perfect. I call it Studio B. This is where the painting and finish work is done. After the gourds are cleaned, cut and assembled, they go to studio B. I sign, date and number each piece. I’ve just finished piece number 6832. Each piece is documented.

Do you have a favorite piece you’d like to talk about?

I do have a favorite piece. I’ve created a special octopus by combining ten gourds together. I’ve added air dry clay to form suction cups on his tentacles and sculpt together the seams, extend tentacles and create shells and trim. I use a special oil based paint then clear coat for a glasslike finish.

How is your personality reflected in your work?

I’m a native Floridian. I grew up on the beach gathering shells and admiring the beautiful scenery. I love the water and all of it’s underwater creatures. Turtles are among my favorite beings to observe.

How do you overcome creative blocks?

We participated in Arts and Crafts Shows for 15 years until my husband’s stroke changed our lives. Now, I’m a full time caregiver and part time artist. I find comfort and pleasure in continuing to create art.

Who helps and inspires you and where can we find your artwork?

My daughter Beth, she lives in Jacksonville and represents me. I sell exclusively in Atlantic Beach Arts Market and privately through my email – marmags@aol.com

Please come see our Featured Artist and 90+ other vendors at The Atlantic Beach Arts Market located at 1805 Mayport Rd. Open everyday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Much Love,
Ame Cowan
