Gems to Jewelry
What part of First Coast do you reside now and how long have you lived there?
Currently a Jacksonville Beach resident, first moved here from out West in 1986.
How long have you been doing your craft or trade?
I began my home jewelry business in 2002 to survive being a “stay-at-home” mom.
What brings out your creativity?
I was never formally trained in my craft, but I feel that I have a talent for color and composition. I feel most creative when I am on a buying spree looking for my raw materials. All of the colors and shapes speak to me. I really must have an idea for each strand I buy, before I buy it, or else I would be in trouble! Or debt! It’s very difficult not to buy everything.
What does your work aim to say? Are you trying to bring a smile to someone’s face or add to someone’s home decor?
I get the most satisfaction when I create a piece and someone is enchanted with it and takes it to a new home. I am especially excited about seeing one of my creations worn by it’s owner, when I see them again around town.
Are there any spaces or designers that have influenced you?
I admire so many jewelers and many of them are friends. I like to think that I have a style that is different and sets me apart.
What is your favorite artistic accomplishment?
I love to take a traditionally shaped bead and find a different way to use it in a necklace or earrings.
What is the best way for artists to network?
Social media is the easiest way to connect with the world and to customers. I have an Instagram account and a Facebook page and I share my jewelry photos with everyone there.
If you had a question you would like to ask another artist what would it be?
I would love to work with a silver smith and create that type of jewelry. If anyone is interested in having an apprentice, please let me know.
How can we see your work?
You can find my work (plus 100 other artists) in the Atlantic Beach Arts Market on Mayport Road. They are open every day from 10-5pm. I have a website www.Gemmyjewelry.com (needs to be updated) and I am on Instagram as TGems. I will be showing at the Arts in the Park Art Festival on April 9 soon.
Is there anything else that you want to tell everyone?
I’d love to meet anyone interested in seeing my work at the Arts Market. I work on Tuesdays from 10-1:30.
